To begin with, Wes was raised in Kansas City, where he was educated at Park Hill High School.
Talking about his professional career, the band Puddle of Mudd was formed in 1993. Heavily influenced by the wave grunge, the band became highly experienced and won several competitions that helped them to formulate their first two albums – “Stuck” (1994) and “Abrasive” (1997). In 1999, some members left the band and Wes Scantlin took the position of lead vocalist. Their breakthrough came in 2001 – 2002 with singles including “Blurry” (2001) and “She Hates Me” (2002). After the worldwide success of the album “Come Clean” (2001), its successor “Life on Display” (2003) was released, but asides from the first single “Away From Me” (2003), the album was completely ignored in Europe. In 2007, the group released the album “Famous”, and subsequently participated in many concerts in the USA. Although this album was unknown in Europe, it was remarkably successful in the USA mainly through the song “Psycho” (2007), which became number one in the Modern Rock Tracks and in the mainstream rock. Wes’ net worth was rising steadily.
In 2009, the band recorded the album entitled “Vol. 4 Songs in the Key of Love and Hate”, and in 2010 released the new single “Shook Up the World” via iTunes, to encourage the USA team for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver; the single was also included in the compilation album. The income from downloads during the period of the games largely went to the team sports.
In the middle of 2010, the band played a series of concerts in the USA with groups Shinedown, Sevendust and Chevelle. In 2011, the album “re:(disc)overed” was released which contains cover versions of songs by The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Th Steve Miller Band, Led Zeppelin and others. In 2012, the group gave several concerts in Europe, and was preparing for a new album despite new personnel changes.
Meanwhile, in his less-than-private personal life, in 2012-13 Wesley Scantlin divorced from Jessica Nicole Smith who he had married in 2008, and around the same time he was charged for driving without a license and under the influence of cocaine, to which he pleaded guilty and avoided going to jail. Under the influence of alcohol, he insulted an air hostess who refused to give him another drink, and the aircraft had to stop in Texas where Scantlin was taken off the plane by police. Later, he was charged for a case of domestic violence against his ex-wife. The following year, he demolished the fence of his neighbour as a result Scantlin was arrested for vandalism. During the summer of 2013, the group cancelled several concerts because of fears that the group may not be complete.
Most recently, Scanlin was arrested after an armed stand-off with police officers at his Los Angeles residence, and the effects of alcohol has seen the band curtail several concerts.
